What is LASIK Vision Surgery?

LASIK Vision Surgery is the most widely performed for refractive errors. A laser is used to reshape your cornea and correct how your eye focuses light.  Laser vision surgery encompasses several eye surgeries used to correct refractive errors. Refractive surgery is necessary if you have a refractive error such as:  myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, or presbyopia. Refractive surgery is used to help correct these errors and restore normal vision. Not all people are candidates for refractive surgery, but for those that are it can be a great method for correcting vision errors and freeing you from glasses or contact use.

How Does Refractive Surgery Work?

Vision surgery works in different ways depending on the refractive error. Here are some examples of how LASIK vision surgery works for these conditions:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia) responds well to LASIK refractive surgery techniques.  Laser vision surgery reduces the steep curvature of your cornea so that your eye’s focusing power is reduced. Images that are focused in front of your retina as a result of a longer eye or steep corneal curve, are pushed closer to (or directly onto) the retina after surgery.
  • In the case of farsightedness (hyperopia) refractive surgery procedures work to establish a steeper cornea to increase your eye’s focusing power. Images that are focused beyond the retina, because of a short eye or flat cornea, will be pulled closer to (or directly onto) the retina following vision surgery.
  • Astigmatism can sometimes be corrected with refractive vision surgery techniques that are able to, selectively,  reshape parts of an abnormal cornea to smooth it and make it symmetrical. The result of this procedure is that images focus clearly on the retina rather than being distorted from light scattering through an abnormally-shaped cornea.

Is LASIK Refractive Surgery for You?

If you are considering LASIK vision surgery, an examination with one of our Optical Master’s doctors is a great place to start.  They can determine if you are a candidate for the procedure.  LASIK refractive surgery may be a good option for you if you:

  • Want to reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses;
  • Are free from eye disease;
  • Are prepared for the risks and possible side effects of the procedure;
  • Are willing to still use glasses or contacts after the procedure for optimum vision;
  • Have a refractive error that lies within candidacy requirements for refractive vision surgery
