How Healthy Are Your Eyes?

Eye health isn’t thought about that much until you notice something is wrong.  Unfortunately, when you have waited long enough to notice something is wrong, you can find yourself in a place you don’t want to be.  Safeguard your eye health by committing to regular eye exams.  Your eyes are one of your most important tools for everyday living, sensing and enjoying.  How healthy are your eyes? Start your new year off right by scheduling an eye exam to assess your ability to see and the general health of your eyes. Catching eye conditions early can prevent the disabling effects of eye problems associated with diabetes, high blood pressure and other conditions and challenges. Ensuring your eyesight is at its best can help you start the year with confidence. Our Optical Masters team is dedicated to helping you keep your eyes healthy.

Start the New Year Out Right with 100% Sight!

How long has it been since you had a comprehensive eye exam? If you can’t remember, it probably has been too long. Comprehensive, dilated eye exams are one of the best things you can do to support eye health and achieve your best sight. Millions of people face problems with their vision every year. Some problems can cause permanent vision loss--even blindness--while more common eye problems can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses.  Don’t take risks with your eye health. Schedule an exam today to ensure your eyes are free from disease or issues.

Taking Care of Your Eyes

Eyecare is an essential part of any healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, watching your weight and making sure you have your eyes checked regularly doesn't just keep your vision in tip-top condition, but these measures can also help in the detection of long-term health issues such as diabetes, which can lead to permanent eye damage.

Eye Health Tips from the National Eye Institute

As part of the federal government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Eye Institute is devoted to:  “supporting research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to blinding eye diseases, visual disorders, mechanisms of visual function, preservation of sight, and the special health problems and requirements of the blind.”  They offer the following tips for maintaining excellent eye health:

  • Schedule regular comprehensive eye exams--at least every two years

  • Know your family’s eye health history to watch out for hereditary issues

  • Eat right to protect your sight--vegetables, fruits, leafy greens, omega-3s

  • Maintain a healthy weight--obesity can lead to diabetes and other systemic issues that put your sight at risk.

  • Use protective eyewear during sports, hobbies or work

  • Quit smoking--smoking is linked to macular degeneration, cataract, and optic nerve damage

  • Protect your eyes from the sun using sunglasses

  • Practice the 20-20-20 rule if you log lots of time behind a computer--every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds to reduce eyestrain.

  • Avoid infection by washing your hands before putting in contact lenses or touching your eyes

How Often Should You Have Your Eyes Examined?

According to a study, one out of every 10 people in the U.S. are at increased risk of developing a serious eye disease, yet most of them are not getting the annual, sight-saving eye exams they need to preserve their vision.  At Optical Masters, we recommend you have an eye exam at least every two years, or more frequently if recommended by the eye doctor. With more than 100 different ways to test your eyes are working correctly, our doctors select the tests most appropriate for you. The eye exam not only provides an accurate assessment of your ability to see but also gauges the general health of your eyes.  Eye exams also serve in early identification of condition-related eye problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
